#29 Hardware/software needed for students

about MS Office suite 5

photo software  2

5. Suggested improvement - Rate your satisfaction with your current NPC supplied hardware (computer, printer, scanner, etc.)

1. Regular maintenance on the laptops provided in the library for faculty.

2. Current CPUs are outdated and need replacing as they are unable to handle the current amount of testing that is required of students. They have inadequate memory and speed for the tasks required. The students are relying more and more on the computer lab, as they prefer to complete assignments, etc while they are on campus.

3.  Office hardware is vast improvement over the recent past. Providing all new faculty with the best office hardware available from day one should be a priority. Video and audio needs systematic upgrade to move us beyond what has been cobbled together over the past decade. This should be ongoing top college priority--entrenched so to speak,so that changes in administrators do not upset the apple cart. Checkout lap tops from the library (i.e., Gateway) need to be replaced as outdated.

4. Adjuncts have an old computer with many people using it. I do not use it anymore, I work at home

5. Comment: I have not used NPC-supplied equipment in quite some time, so my "Adequate" rating is based solely on my evaluation of that answer as the "neutral" answer.

6. Computers in the Blunk building can not run a lot of the current software only 256mb ram.

7. We have tried for a year to upgrade our computers in M5 as they have 128K RAM and will not run the software purchased with our textbooks. We have sent proposals that are supported by grant money without decision/ordering from IT. We have acquired our own quotes for RAM at LCC and ordered it. When we ask for a quote, we are given quotes that cost 3x what we can find on the Internet or at local retail outlets. The CTWeb platform is cumbersome and outdated. Training on Jenzabar was promised but postponed. The requirement for administrative rights is ridiculous in every situation. While IS is willing to train their staff in the restriction and limitation regulatory requirements, certainly college-educated faculty could manage to observe and uphold the same standards. In some situations, the faculty has more experience and training than IS staff.

8. I have none.

9.  Set up network-based file and applications servers. Provide network-based or local backup services.

10. 1. old computer (better computer was taken out of room, current one is terrible, not able to open, view, send attachments, difficult to use images, my job relies on using visual images, very disapointed previous hardware was removed). 2. no printer (was taken out of room, previously worked out great, very disappointed previous printer was removed, time consuming not having one) Library printer is also low quality, only one I am aware of available for adjunct. 3. digital projector, excellent, very nice to have one.

11. I didn't have any for personal use.  You need an NA option.

12. Better monitors.

13. We were very excited to have four used computers in our classroom. The only problem is that three of our computers have memory of 128 and the only only 256. Needless to say that Windows uses alot of that and our programs are bogging down the computers. We don't mind used computers but a little more memory would be very helpful!

14. Update computers, i.e., add memory (speed up), programs, etc. Uniform all labs, i.e., same computers, programs, printers, etc.

15. Considering the amount of traveling that NPC instructors must do during a semester a laptop would be the most practical form of technology they could utilize.

6. Suggested improvement -Rate your satisfaction with your opportunities for learning more about technology at NPC.

1. Idea? to require all audio instructors to take a class on the new equipment and how to get the most out of it.

2. I don't have the time in my position to attend any classes, I will be looking into taking some online to develop more computer skills. I would like more scheduled/unscheduled opportunities to develop knowledge, I am very willing to learn, especially since I am dealing with these issue constantly.

3. I think faculty need to be better informed as to what is happening or not happening with technology throughout the college as it relates to distance learning, and what's available to students in the libraries or writing centers so that teaching may be more integrated across the vast distances of our district. Too often notes go up in classrooms without any real explanation to faculty. There's need for continuous faculty input on classroom layout, the placement of equipment, and how best to orchestrate learning/teaching environments for students from those who do that full time, in place of what appears at present to be a budget driven process. We also have a tendency to deflect suggestions/requests for improvement, putting them off onto to new personnel who we are told, once they come on board, will be involved in solutions. However, these are systemic organizational problems with long shelf lives (i.e., go on year after year)and new personalities often fail to take the time to understand what the problem is before imposing their own solutions, or suffer from false promises, their own or the institution. We don't need more training, unless it is elective. We need fewer surveys and just plain implementation for improvements so that NPC is a regional leader in distance learning (i.e., all modes of delivery).

4.  I have not had access to tech.

5. My use of NPC has been limited to xxxx as a student, and no effort has been made or asked of me to use NPC as anything more than that. Since I teach xxxx as a "certificate-only" program through NPC for my employer, and only occasionally appear as a guest instructor in other instructors' xxxx classes, the fact that so little interaction occurs between NPC and me is not a serious problem, in my estimation.

6. Need information and training about online course development.

7. I have been given few opportunities. There needs to be more variety of times or ways to access information.

8.  It would be helpful to have short classes for different areas at various times.

9.  What opportunities? All previous jobs I have had opportunities to gain technology skills.

10. I didn't know there were any opportunities.

11. It would be nice to have training modules on line other than having in person training sessions athat are usually at a time when I can not attend.

12. More hands on.

13. If you are talking about classes offered, I would like to see more courses offered.

14. Implement the suggested improvements listed above.

15. NPC staff and faculty have opportunities to take classes, however we should have the opportunity to participate in professional development that focuses on technology that would enhance our jobs. I would suggest short 1-2 day workshops that counted toward pd for all NPC employees.

7. Suggested Improvement - Rate your satisfaction with the technological support you receive from IS personnel at NPC.

1. Those guys bend over backwards to help. They are overworked.

2.  They are understaffed for the amount of geographical area they must cover. They need more trained personnel to be able to assist various areas appropriately. Those that are have been excellent and always willing to help when available.

3.  Noticeably good things about "customer service," include: 1) notices about equipment failures, upgrades, or problems that alert faculty before classes so that they may modify or adjust their teaching; and 2) feedback requests as to completion/satisfaction with HEAT requests. Suggested areas of improvement: 1) increased training opportunities for control personnel, affirmation that the learning/teaching environment is top college priority/mission, and involvement of faculty in how to interface tech solutions into the classroom environment. Also, review salary scale for areas of improvement and boost overall budget so that they are the elite among the IS community throughout community colleges in our region. They deserve that opportunity.

4. When I have sought out help, particularly through the library it has been very helpful.

5. I have not asked for help and I have not received any help; therefore, the support must be adequate.

6.  EVERY person on the IS team is absolutely fantastic. If they don't have an answer, they work very hard to research the problem and obtain a solution. They are a fantastic bunch who are concerned and responsive.

7.  The only thing I needed was the way to access email for NPC, but I have never gotten that information.

8. I have had some above and beyond and I have had some non existant and i have had some begin and then go no where... hard to rate as an overall experience.

9.  That was good.

10. Distance wise to Hopi center takes several days.

11. Every time a support staff works on our computers they have done a great job. We appreciate their support in setting up the computers.

12. Although the current personnel is wonderful, they need help! There are not enough of them to go around. If a couple more personnel of the same great caliber were hired, our technological needs would be met much more quickly.

13. NPC is short-handed, but the support we do receive is excellent.

14. Great group!!

8. Suggested Improvement - Rate your satisfaction with your current NPC supplied sofware (operating system, office suite, task-specific tools).

1. There are not enough staff to install the needed software on computers for the students to use. I become frustrated because I don't have the privileges to do this myself, and the trained staff are so busy. When I do find useful programs I am unable to utilize them because of this.

2.  Video classrooms need streaming capabilities. Students need email accounts now. Upgrades to Vista need to take place, be thorough, and done soon, as students are experiencing all kinds of interface problems due to our outdated software, as are faculty. MS Office suite needs to be updated for faculty. Faculty need to be able to download software or simple upgrades without scheduling the valuable time of IS folks needed elsewhere.

3.  I have not had software supplied

4.  NPC did not provide any of the software tools I use, so the answer must be "adequate".

5. Please don't implement Office 2007 without adequate notice and training - it's very different and not as intuitive as 2003 ;-)

6.  I have none.

7.
